Understanding Roman Numerals
What are Roman Numerals?
Roman numerals are a numeral system that originated in ancient Rome and remained the usual way of writing numbers throughout Europe well into the Late Middle Ages. They use combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet to represent values.
Basic Symbols:
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000
Numbers are formed by combining these symbols additively
Subtractive Notation
Roman numerals use subtractive notation to avoid repeating four symbols in a row. A smaller symbol placed before a larger one indicates subtraction.
- •IV = 4 (5 - 1) instead of IIII
- •IX = 9 (10 - 1) instead of VIIII
- •XL = 40 (50 - 10) instead of XXXX
- •XC = 90 (100 - 10) instead of LXXXX
Rules and Guidelines
Repetition Rules
I, X, C, and M can be repeated up to three times in succession. V, L, and D cannot be repeated.
Subtraction Rules
Only I, X, and C can be used for subtraction. I can subtract from V and X, X from L and C, and C from D and M.
Order Rules
Symbols are written from largest to smallest, with subtractive pairs as exceptions.
